Lisa Reihana discusses a diverse and long engagement with video art, and wrestling with tools associated with cinema and broadcasting. The changing face of New Zealand society in the late nineteen-eighties was the backdrop to challenging visual norms of the time. This led to questions such as What does it mean to be a first generation urban artist in Auckland, New Zealand – the largest Pacific city in the world ? How does gender affect access to indigenous knowledge, and what is it’s impact on the stories you tell? The resulting strategies has led to a sustained practice that attempts to both normalize and transcend ideas of what it is to be Māori.
