Safety + Security
Your safety is our primary concern
The department of Safety and Security is located on the first floor of the Barbara Marshall Residence Hall. Staff members are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are trained in basic first aid and CPR and are required to participate in continual in-house training to upgrade their skills.
Safety and Security staff are unarmed and carry private police officer commissions issued through the Kansas City Missouri Police Department.
KCAI is committed to maintaining an educational and work environment that is free from sexual harassment, in which all members of the KCAI community (e.g., faculty, staff, students, Continuing Education students, visitors, donors, vendors, etc.) are able to devote their full attention and best efforts to the job, educational pursuits, or other association with KCAI. To this end, KCAI encourages and expects reporting of any and all behaviors prohibited by this policy so that they may be promptly addressed. KCAI believes that each person should be given an equal right to succeed based on their abilities and academic or job performance, without being bothered or distracted by offensive behavior on the part of other individuals associated with the KCAI community. All members of the KCAI community are responsible for creating an atmosphere free of sexual harassment on and off-campus; by not only following this policy but also by engaging in appropriate bystander intervention should they observe inappropriate behavior. To ensure this vision is achieved, KCAI has put in place this policy on sexual harassment.
Sexual harassment either intentional or unintentional has no place in the educational or work environment. Accordingly, KCAI prohibits any form of these behaviors of or by any student, employee (i.e., supervisory or non-supervisory), or others associated with KCAI. This means KCAI will thoroughly and promptly investigate all complaints of misconduct prohibited by this policy. If an investigation confirms that prohibited conduct occurred, KCAI will take prompt and appropriate remedial action to prevent the misconduct, eliminate any hostile environment, prevent its recurrence, and correct its effects on those involved, if applicable. Individuals who violate this policy are subject to the full range of discipline, up to and including reprimand, probation, suspension, termination, and expulsion. KCAI imposes no statute of limitations for alleged violations of this policy and will investigate and adjudicate such allegations, regardless of when they are made, to the extent possible.
Reporting Sexual Harassment
KCAI cannot resolve matters that are not brought to its attention and encourages any member of its community to report instances where they feel subjected to sexual harassment. All reports will be investigated. Reports may be made to the individuals listed below and suggestions are given based on whether the complainant is a student or employee.

Residence Hall Security
The Barbara Marshall Residence Hall is equipped with electronic key card access. In addition, security officers are stationed in the building 24/7.
Exterior lighting is an important part of the college’s commitment to campus safety and security. The campus is well lit, but in an ongoing effort to maintain a safe environment, further lighting improvements periodically are made to parking areas, pedestrian walkways, and building exteriors.
If you need assistance
Contacting KCAI security officers is convenient and easy for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The security officers on patrol answer and respond immediately to emergency situations. To contact KCAI security, call 816.931.6666. Kansas City Missouri Police can be reached by dialing 9-1-1 for emergency situations.
The cooperation and involvement of students, faculty, and staff in a campus safety program is absolutely necessary. However, all individuals must also assume responsibility for their personal safety and the security of their personal belongings by taking simple, common sense precautions. For example, anyone may request an escort when returning to residence hall at night or when leaving campus and going to a vehicle in the parking lot or anywhere within 3 blocks of KCAI’s campus. This service is provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by calling 816.931.6666.
Doors to rooms in the Barbara Marshall Residence Hall should be kept locked, and office doors should be secured when not occupied. Valuable items, such as stereos, cameras, and televisions, should be marked with engraving instruments, which are provided by the department of Safety and Security at no charge. Bicycles should be properly engraved and secured with a sturdy lock. Students, faculty, and staff should have their vehicles registered with the department of safety and security. Vehicles should be kept locked at all times and valuables stored in the trunk. Everyone should be alert to unusual or suspicious persons or activities and immediately report these incidents to the department of safety and security.
Unauthorized Drugs + Alcohol are forbidden
Severe state and federal criminal penalties are imposed for possession, sale, trafficking and illegal interstate transportation of illicit drugs. Disciplinary sanctions at KCAI for possession and sale of illegal drugs and alcohol can result in disruption or termination of education or employment. KCAI is in compliance and in support of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988. KCAI recognizes that responsible and moderate serving and consumption of alcoholic beverages in our society is a common custom, but the use of alcoholic beverages at authorized campus activities must be in accordance with the law (legal drinking age is 21). The unauthorized use of or possession of alcohol on the campus is prohibited.
Alcohol, illegal drugs and weapons are not permitted on the campus. KCAI officers enforce laws regulating underage drinking, the use of controlled substances and weapons possession. Policies on alcohol and drug abuse, student disciplinary procedures, and employee disciplinary procedures may be found in both the Kansas City Art Institute student handbook and the Kansas City Art Institute staff handbook.
