A Flag That Flies Large Enough
October 28 - November 11, 2024
To "flag something" is to draw attention to information seen as important or crucial. Flags are visual communication tools that speak in symbols, emblems, and beliefs. They are tools of rebellion, oppression, and independence.
Flags signal. Flags obscure. Flags demand. Flags inspire. Flags educate.
The Fall 2024 semester coincides with a presidential election. For those who have the right to vote, it is a privilege. This privilege to voice our deepest concerns, our fundamental freedoms, and protections is still being fought for today. Artists, protesters, organizers, thinkers, and laborers have all worked to establish existing rights. These same people continue the fight.
In recognition of the right to vote, we invite you to contribute your voice to an on-campus installation, A Flag That Flies Large Enough.
The Collaborative Practice Committee invites you - a member of the KCAI community - to create a flag that symbolizes your beliefs and vision. Your flag can be made out of any material you elect. The design is up to you. It can be abstract forms, photographic imagery, text, poetry, found materials, etc.
There are no parameters on dimensions. Standard flag size is 3’ x 5’, but there is no requirement that our flags match that. Project organizers will provide ½” x 48” wooden dowels to stake flags into the ground. A sewn (or taped, glued, stapled, etc.) channel on the flag's left side is recommended so that it can slide onto the dowel.
All flags will ultimately be gathered together and installed on campus the week of October 28 to present the diverse set of views within our KCAI community. A few flags, chosen by students in each class, will hang in the KCAI gallery from mid October to mid January.
