The artists included in Under the Influence openly claims a wide range of influences upon their work. To art historical sources and more recent trends seen in art from California, they added things like popular culture, consumer culture, surf culture, and zine culture.

Artists included Michele Fiero, Chris Finley, Martin Kersels, Charles Labelle, Loren Sandbik, Stephen Shackleford, and Brad Spence.

Under the Influence: New Art from L.A. is curated by Chris Acuña-Hansen. An artist, educator, and gallerist/curator, Acuna-Hansen opened ah gallery in the Chinatown district of Los Angeles in the fall of 1999. At the time of the exhibition, he was Associate Professor of Art at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, California, where he also directed the the Rio Hondo Gallery for 7 years. During a one-year sabbatical from Rio Hondo College in 1998-99, Acuña-Hansen held a one-year appointment as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs/Student Life at the Kansas City Art Institute.
