1970s: Suites and Portfolios from the Hallmark Collection
03.09.2001 - 04.15.2001
The 1970s: Suites and Portfolios from the Hallmark Collection presents a selection of artist prints from the 1970s. An especially significant decade for printmaking in the United States, the 1970s witnessed an exciting surge in innovative collaborations between artists and print workshops.
This exhibition examined the serial format employed by artists in creating suites and portfolios and presented a unique cross-section of contemporary art from a recent period in art history. From the Minimalism of Sol LeWitt and Brice Marden, to the remnants of Abstract Expressionism in Cy Twombly and Helen Frankenthaler, from the New Image sensibility of works by Pat Steir and Jennifer Bartlett, to the Pop Art of Roy Lichtenstein, this exhibition focuses on a dynamic decade in American Art.
Organized for the Artspace by guest curator, Melissa Rountree, curator of the Hallmark Fine Art Collection, the exhibition included work by Helen Frankenthaler, Frank Stella, Brice Marden, Roy Lichtenstein, Pat Steir, Cy Twombly, Sol LeWitt, Jennifer Bartlett, and Romare Bearden.
