Shirin Neshat: Fervor

The Artspace presents Shirin Neshat’s Fervor (2000), a 2-channel video and sound installation, and a selection of Neshat’s photographs. Neshat, an internationally acclaimed artist, was born in Iran in 1957, and currently lives and works in New York City. Recognized for her filmic video works that express the artist’s experience of two cultures, Neshat has focused particular attention towards the examination of women’s roles in Iran and the phenomenon of veiling behind a black chador. Within her filmic works, including Fervor, Neshat expresses and provokes dualities, including the blending of fiction and reality, man and woman, East and West, freedom and fundamentalism, tradition and modernity. Without words, Neshat conveys and presents layers of emotion and meaning through picture and sound that invoke the real, but also remain enigmatic.
Shirin Neshat has shown internationally and nationally in numerous exhibitions, including: Documenta 11, Kassel (2002); 2000 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, Austria (2000); Sydney Biennial, Sydney, Australia (2000); La Biennale di Venizia, Venice, Italy (1999); The Art Institute of Chicago (1999), and many others.
The exhibition, Shirin Neshat, was curated by Raechell Smith, Director, H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute.
