Simone Leigh’s I ran to the rock to hide my face the rock cried out no hiding place reflects the rich influences that inform the ceramic sculpture, video, and installation works created by Simone Leigh, ranging from African art and architecture, historical folk and craft traditions, popular culture, science fiction, ethnography, performance, and contemporary art. In an ongoing consideration of the black female body, the artist explores historical and contemporary practices of representation and the conditions of identity, power, and lived experience for anonymous and regarded women in their many roles as worker, creator, healer, performer, and storyteller.

Based in Brooklyn, Simone Leigh has been included in exhibitions at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, the Atlanta Center for Contemporary Art, The Contemporary Art Museum Houston, Dak’Art in Senegal, and in New York at PS1 MOMA, Tilton Gallery, Sculpture Center, Jack Shainman Gallery, the Kitchen, and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
