2002 NCECA Invitational Exhibition: Material Speculation

The 2002 NCECA Invitational Exhibition: Material Speculations includes the work of nine contemporary artists whose work explores the evolving conception of the materiality of clay. Through recently created or new installations, each artist respondes in unique and surprising ways to the expansive potentials of clay as an artistic medium.
Since the mid-twentieth century, the history of contemporary American ceramics has swiftly evolved through a series of artist-led innovations, transforming the conception of and approach to materials, the techniques applied to the medium and the resulting objects. Ceramic expression is realized in the manner of utilitarian vessels, nonfunctional abstract and figurative sculpture, and conceptually-based installations. Variations of and references to the history of ceramics, painting, sculpture and site-specific installation are all at play in Material Speculations.
Artists in the exhibition include: Mary Jo Bole, Sadashi Inuzuka, James Melchert, Walter McConnell, Annabeth Rosen, Jeanne Quinn, Deborah Sigel, Jamie Walker and Frances Whitehead.
