Sam Morgan (’25 Illustration) enjoys working in vintage-inspired styles rich with texture. He’s drawn to bold, blocky graphics and hand lettering, and draws much of his influence from comic books and sequential storytelling.

“I have gotten in trouble for always having a sketchbook around. In middle school and high school, I’ve had teachers speak to my parents about it because I was always drawing and not paying attention in class,” he says.

That bold skill set, honed in the Kansas City Art Institute’s Illustration Department and refined in KCAI’s Micro Agency class with Professor David Terrill, resulted in the poster chosen to commemorate the historic Grand Opening of the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension on Friday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m.

This fact was recently highlighted in a news story on KSHB 41.

As for the poster, which will be given away during the Grand Opening celebrations, Sam says that representatives from the KC Streetcar visited their class to explain what they were looking for. Nine students then created original posters based on those conversations.

“A main goal was to encourage people to ride the KC Streetcar. That was part of their intention in having artists create the streetcar poster. They could have gone with a simpler graphic design, but instead they chose illustrators to make it exciting and personable,” Sam says.

This partnership was part of KCAI’s Sponsored Studio program, which fosters collaborations with area businesses to explore creative design challenges, conduct research, and develop real-world solutions. The KC Streetcar Authority shares that it is proud to showcase this collaboration and the design will be available at the community celebrations and at KCAI Underground.
