Marie Bannerot McInerney, Professor of Fiber at the Kansas City Art Institute, is featured in the Summer 2025 edition of Hand Papermaking. In this issue, she shares an in-depth look at her creative process behind Falling Into Milk, an ever-evolving installation that she manipulated in situ over nine months at the Tarble Arts Center in Illinois.

"In the spring of 2022, I was invited to create a site-specific installation at the Tarble Arts Center. The work…would challenge my approach, pushing me to respond in new and vulnerable ways,” McInerney says.

Free of Expectations

Falling Into Milk captures the fluidity of change: ethereal and transportive. At times, the viewer encounters delicate paper pulp resting on frosted vinyl; moments later, they are in outer space looking at the cosmos.

"I recognized the challenge; I was free of previous expectations, but with the pressure to respond in time; I would not be able to rely on my color-coded install guides. This now became a project space,” she says.
