Participants will also discover how warm water will affect the stuffed fillings and bring color to their sachet material to create an intentional small bag or pocket to pack for their use.

“The word Sachet can mean many things – a sewn bag filled with lavender thrown in an underwear drawer, a tied cheesecloth bundle of spices thrown in a soup, a packet of tea; it is a small package for transporting something – a smell, a flavor – from one place to another. For the purposes of this workshop, we will be creating a sachet for keeping with us when we move from our waking life to our sleeping life, or perhaps from our conscious persona to our unconscious mind, our future to our present maybe, in hopes of bringing one closer to the other.” – Hadley Clark

This program is open to all experience levels. All art materials for the workshop including Sashiko thread and needle, cotton material for sachet, plant material such as Dyer’s Chamomile, Marigold, Coreopsis, Sulphur Cosmos, Yarrow Flowers, and scissors will be available on site.

All workshops are free, materials are provided, and rsvp is required. Some of the workshops are consecutive and build upon instruction from the previous session, so attendees are encouraged (though not required) to attend those previous workshops to gain the full experience.

About the Artist:

With a background in fine art (University of Kansas, BFA 2001) as well as high-end fashion design and garment construction (The New School | Parsons Paris 2010), Kansas City-based Artist Hadley Clark maintains a fine art studio practice as well as an eponymous fashion label. Clark’s work includes handmade wearable coverings as well as wall and floor-based sculptural pieces, all of which draw from her belief in the importance of material reuse and natural dyeing processes. In addition to her independent studio work, Clark leads regular community-based workshops relating to her own studio interests on subjects as varied as sewing basics, methods of mending, 3-Dimensional construction, and collaging with reused textiles. She is currently a resident at Studios Inc.

Hand Stitched + Naturally Fed Dream Sachet with Hadley Clark is organized by the H&R Block Artspace as part of its Art + Practice: 2024 Summer Workshop Series, June 29 - August 24, 2024.
