Representing graduating classes from the course's earliest years to its most recent, the exhibition highlights how a shared foundation in quilting has grown into remarkably diverse creative practices. While some alumni have continued working directly in textiles, others have translated their early lessons in material and structure into sculpture, painting, printmaking, and installation. “The class is just so special that I wanted to celebrate everything that comes out of it. And there’s so many students that take it, not just from Fiber, but from other majors. So you see some of the original quilts that they made in the class alongside more recent work,” says Eichler-Messmer.

Displaying the alumni's original student samplers next to their contemporary pieces creates a powerful visual timeline of their artistic evolution. The overwhelming response from former students eager to participate speaks to the strong community built at KCAI. Reflecting on the exhibition's artists Eichler-Messmer noted, “A lot of them have kept quilting, or quilting has infiltrated their other work. Oh, that was really powerful for that many students, or alumni, to want to be in the show.”

Running through December 5, the exhibition also features Eichler-Messmer’s own textiles, illustrating the parallel growth of the educator alongside her former students. What Quilts Carry goes beyond an alumni showcase to celebrate how material traditions are carried forward by a new generation.
