Scholastic Art Awards

About the Awards

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation’s youth, and provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated. Each year, increasing numbers of teens participate in the program and become a part of our community—young artists and writers, filmmakers and photographers, poets and sculptors, video game artists and science fiction writers, along with countless educators who support and encourage the creative process.

Kansas City Art Institute is honored to partner with the Scholastic Art Awards recognizing talented students in our region and helping to provide opportunities for those students to attend creative, pre-college programs in the future.

All deadlines for the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have passed. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards will reopen for submissions in September 2019.

American Visions nominees
Out of all artworks across all categories and grades submitted within the region, five Gold Key level artworks were selected as “Best-of-Show” artworks and will be submitted as nominees for American Visions medals adjudication at the national level.

What Happens Now?

  • All Gold Key work will proceed digitally to the National Scholastic office to be judged with all of the other Gold Key work from all of the other regions of the country.  If you won a Gold Key, you don’t need to do anything further to have your work considered for a National Award.  The announcements of the National Awards will be in mid-March.
  • Gold Key artwork will need to be prepared for regional exhibition (see more information about that below under Exhibition).
  • Gold Key winners will be invited to a ceremony at the KCAI Crossroads Gallery: Center for Contemporary Practice on Saturday, March 23 (see more information about that below under Ceremony). Gold Key certificates and keys will be handed out at the ceremony.
  • Silver Key and Honorable Mention awardees will receive certificates and pins through their art teachers in mid-February.
