Policing Gender: Works by Lorenzo Triburgo
September 23, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - October 21, 2016 @ 5:00 pm
Policing Gender at KCAI Crossroads Gallery: Center for Contemporary Practice is an installation of photographs and audio that addresses the loneliness, danger and fear of queer existence that are perhaps nowhere more perceptible in the U.S. than in the prison system.
The title Policing Gender, refers to the surveillance, policing and punishment of LGBTQ bodies in the United States. Rather than approach the series from a literal perspective that relies on the visual language of suffering, Lorenzo Triburgo employs visual metaphors that conjure both absence and surveillance. His largescale photographs of fabric call to mind the site of a portrait, but where one might expect to see a subject, we find instead a lush darkness. In this way, Triburgo reflects on the absence of community members who have been “shuffled out of sight and shuttered out of reach.”
Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 6 to 8 p.m. First Friday in October; Saturday by appointment.
