Current Perspectives: Richard Saxton
April 12, 2018 @ 11:45 am - 1:00 pm
Richard Saxton, artist and the founder of M12 STUDIO, an interdisciplinary group that creates and supports new modes of art making in rural and remote areas is the speaker at Current Perspectives on April 12. Saxton will present on a number of his projects along with discussing the creation of art projects in rural space.
Saxton and M12 are best known for projects that explore the aesthetics of rural cultures and their vernacular landscapes. Saxton’s work is conceived through an interdisciplinary cultural framework, and can be contextualized through social and site-based art practice. His work has been described as contemporary vernacular, non-heroic, and an art infused with rural experience without subscribing to any one genre or culture. Saxton’s projects are centered around context and place, blending multiple fields and allowing locational research, design, gathering of information, and building to merge, creating a layered collection of artworks, images, publications, and artifacts. Saxton and M12 have been the recipient of numerous awards including those from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Santa Fe Art Institute and the Gates Family Foundation. Saxton is an Associate Professor in Sculpture and Post-Studio Practice at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
