A memo from the Nerman Family President
December 1, 2020
Like many organizations, the college has been evaluating our core programmes and offerings since the pandemic uprooted business operations in March. The Continuing Education (CE) department adapted and moved to online courses when possible and we continued to offer some in-person classes with very small enrollments. Unfortunately, the college was unable to host ArtVenture camps or high school teacher or student residencies this past summer.
KCAI has made the difficult decision to close our Continuing Education department including personnel and programmes. Current classes will continue through December 17. For years, Continuing Education served as the introduction to KCAI for many in our community, so we did not come to this decision lightly.
The core mission of KCAI is the BFA degree programme. Our focus going forward has to be concentrating our resources to support those key academic disciplines. It is our hope to offer Pre-College Art Lab (PCAL) and Educators Art Lab (EAL) during Summer of ’21, depending on the Covid situation, but we cannot guarantee this at this time. We will try to offer an online experience for high school students and high school art teachers.
While it’s impossible to recognize the many instructors, staff and faculty who worked with CE over the years, we thank each of them for their help advancing art appreciation and education in our region.
Tony Jones CBE
The Nerman Family President
Pre-College Art Lab
Spend your summer living and working as an artist in Kansas City. Pre-College Art Lab (PCAL) lets students ages 15 to 18 try out life at KCAI. Stay for three weeks in our loft-style suites. Study with KCAI faculty in subjects like life drawing and creative writing. You’ll select a studio major, and professional practice classes will give you a taste for career paths in art and design. Students who complete PCAL are eligible for a $6,000 tuition scholarship divided over four years of study at KCAI.
