Jason Pollen’s Exhibition Inside/Out Benefits Student Scholarships
Former Fiber Chair Jason Pollen’s exhibition INSIDE/OUT is at the Box Gallery, 1000 Walnut St. in downtown Kansas City through October 26. Fifty percent of proceeds benefit student scholarships at KCAI.
Comprised of Portals, Outliers, Descendants, Oracles, and Nomads, these series of works were inspired by a fascination with how surfaces can both conceal and reveal. Our skin acts as an envelope, hiding its precious contents; the earth we live on hides the fathomless depths of its molten core. Pollen strives to make works whose surfaces intimate the deeper animating force that is the creative process. During a lifetime of dedicated practice, Jason has focused on the phenomena of color, light and shadow, movement and stillness. The works are successful if they prove to be thought- and feeling-provoking, and communicate fascination and delight.

KCAI’s Graphic Design major stands out because of its emphasis on a cross-media skill set, with a rigorous approach to audience research, theory and conceptual problem-solving. Students are exposed to professional practices, concepts and skills integral to building rewarding careers. They graduate as confident, creative design thinkers who can not only adapt to change but also influence it The full-time faculty, all practicing artists and designers, are key to the department’s success. “The faculty understands that we need to equip our students for their future career, not just mimic what’s happening now, as they may be practicing design beyond the year 2060,” says Department Chair and Associate Professor Tyler Galloway. Galloway and Assistant Professors Lisa Maione and Adam Lucas bring a myriad of professional knowledge to the college including time working at national magazines and art directing at Wieden+Kennedy.
