Other resources for students

A variety of additional resources and services are available to students. They include a Central Shop, Media Center and Print Center.

Central Shop

The Central Shop is an interdepartmental support facility for use by the students, faculty and staff of the KCAI. Available are most common woodworking machines and tools, including table saws, bandsaws, miter saws, jointer, planer and drill presses, as well as a supply of hand power tools for use in the shop and for check out. The Central Shop has recently expanded into the digital realm with the addition of CNC technology.

All users of the Central Shop are required to attend a safety orientation. Foundation students complete a multi-week orientation and project as part of the School of the Foundation Year curriculum. Transfer students attend an intensive one session orientation held at the beginning of each semester.

The Central Shop staff oversees the safe operation of the machines and tools and provides instruction, technical support and advice.

Normal fall and spring semester hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8:30-5:00 and 6:00-10:00; 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday (during the spring semester) and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The shop is closed on Fridays during the fall semester, when freshman are in foundation orientation.

Media Center

The Media Center is KCAI’s centralized audio/visual checkout facility serving the needs of all students, faculty and staff. It maintains a varying inventory of audio/visual equipment to support classroom instruction and student work. The Media Center operates an on-site full-service shooting studio that can be reserved for photographic and video projects requiring a light-controlled environment. In addition, cameras, tripods, lighting kits and other photo and video equipment are available for off-premises checkout.
Located on the second floor of the East Building, the Media Center is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday during the fall and spring semesters.

Print Center

KCAI faculty, students and staff have access to a digital Print Center located in Room 103 of the Irving Building. The Print Center was created to provide printing services for students and also to centralize all printing applications on campus.

During the academic year, the Print Center is open from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Aaron Blumenhein, director of the center, encourages students to make use of the center for end-of-semester projects and faculty and staff to use the center for any digital output needs. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/KCAIPrintCenter or contact Blumenhein at ablumenhein@kcai.edu
