New course bridges art and biotech

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Sept. 10, 2014) — This fall 15 students are enrolled in KCAI’s first course in biomedical visualization, a 3-credit-hour elective offered through the college’s illustration program. The instructor is Stan Fernald (’94 industrial design), a research associate at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Fernald also does industrial design on a freelance basis and founded a Web-based company, Retro Diode LLC, which provides LED retrofits for classic microscopes primarily for customers based in Europe. 

H&R Block Artspace at KCAI celebrates 15th anniversary this fall

(Sept. 4, 2014) — Since the H&R Block Artspace opened 15 years ago this November, the Kansas City Art Institute’s public gallery has welcomed thousands of visitors and presented more than 100 exhibitions and public art projects, as well as numerous educational programs and publications.

KCAI, UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance freshmen to ‘converge’ for unique class experience at The Nelson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Aug. 21, 2014) — The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is hosting a lecture for the entire freshmen class of the Kansas City Art Institute and the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music and Dance at 10 a.m. Aug. 29. The class is part of the KCAI Freshman Symposium and the Muse curriculum co-taught and designed by Mara Gibson, academy director for the Conservatory, and Sarah Tyrrell, assistant teaching professor at the Conservatory.

Board announces retirement of president

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Aug. 4, 2014) -- Jacqueline Chanda, president of the Kansas City Art Institute since 2011, has informed the college's board of trustees that she plans to retire on Aug.4, 2014. Chanda had joined KCAI following her previous role as academic dean of the Institute for American Universities and director of the Aix Center in Aix-en-Provence in France.  

Kansas City Art Institute introduces fifth-year program in art education

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (April 30, 2014) — The Kansas City Art Institute has launched a new fifth-year post-baccalaureate program in art education. The Missouri State Board of Education formally approved the program on April 15. The program is aimed at students who are interested in teaching art in Pre-K through Grade 12 public school classrooms. 

Two KCAI students receive $15,000 Windgate Fellowships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (April 23, 2014) — Two Kansas City Art Institute students have won 2014 Windgate Fellowships. The $15,000 fellowships are awarded annually to 10 senior students, nationwide, working in the field of craft. The fellowship program is supported and administered by the Center for Creativity, Craft and Design, which is based in Asheville, N.C.

“Saints Stars & Selfies” exhibition opens Feb. 22 at H&R Block Artspace at KCAI

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Feb. 13, 2014) — “Saints Stars & Selfies,” which opens Feb. 22 at the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute, features recent work by a selection of artists who are inspired by art history. An opening reception is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Artspace, 16 E. 43rd St. the exhibition continues through April 2.

Exhibition of work by KCAI students to open March 7 at Vulpes Bastille in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Feb. 12, 2014) — “Progress and Prosperity,” a juried exhibition of work by Kansas City Art Institute students, opens with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. March 7 at Vulpes Bastille, 1737 Locust St. The show continues through March 29, when a closing reception and artist talks will take place from 3 to 5 p.m.
