ArtSounds presents collaborative performances by composers, performers and visual artists. Initiated by faculty from the Kansas City Art Institute and University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance, ArtSounds explores cross-media expression through creative concert-making. Co-directors Mara Gibson and Paul Rudy set the stage for concert events outside the box and inside the mind's eye and the eye's ear.
Faculty partners from each institution work as co-conspirators from vision and sound to produce provocative events that explore media and music, demonstrating how art sounds and music sees. In ArtSounds performances, vision informs hearing and hearing guides sight in this essential dialogue at the messy intersections of human experience.
ArtSounds performances take place at 7:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month in Epperson Auditorium in Vanderslice Hall on the campus of the Kansas City Art Institute, unless otherwise noted. Performances are free and open to the public
Below is the schedule of performances for the 2014-2015 academic year. This is the ninth year of ArtSounds performances.
Sept. 2, 2014 – EVENT CANCELED – "Cross-overs," featuring the Amrein-Pötzsch trombone and piano duo.
Oct. 14, 2014 - "713: Disturbing the Dust," featuring artist David Huerbin and composer Ryan Oldham, transports the audience into the backrooms of an old building Huerbin and Oldham once called home. Interpreted in several visual and audio vignettes, viewers will experience the wonder, nostalgia and mystery that inspired and changed the artists some 15 years ago.
Nov. 11, 2014 - "Folding Time" with Tom Aber and Dwight Frizzell, associate professor of photography and digital filmmaking at KCAI.
Feb. 10, 2015 - "What if in KC/CT?" organized by John Baker, Gene Gort, Daniel Morel and Ken Steen.
This hour-long program is an audio and visual exploration of intentionality and randomness. Short audio and video works were created separately and randomly paired, resulting in interesting connections for audience members with no preconceived thoughts on how audio relates to video.
March 10, 2015 - "Anolog Drift" with Eric Souther, Michael Miller, Eli Hougland, Russell Thorpe, Brian Padavic, David McIntire and Joshua Wise.
April 14, 2015 - "Splines Reticulated" featuring composer Andrew Cole, pianist Kari Johnson and video artist David Steele Overholt
April 28, 2015 – Mara Gibson's Creative Collaboration's Class – Location TBD
