First day of classes for the 2014 winter intersession.
The Kansas City Art Institute will host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 20 in Epperson Auditorium on the KCAI campus, 4415 Warwick Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. The event is free and open to the public. The program starts with a film at 12:00 p.m.and will be followed by welcome remarks from Jacqueline Chanda, Ph.D., president of the college; Andrea Khan, registrar; and keynote speaker Charles Coulter, journalist and educator. Spectra: A Nomadic Platform for Experimental Film and Video launches its January program with a group exhibition entitled "Sculpties," curated by David Rhoads, at the H&R Block Artspace at KCAI, 16 E. 43rd St.
The exhibition features works by Robert Chase Heishman (’08 photography and art history) and Megan Schvaneveldt, Jordan Johnson (’10 sculpture), Bonnie Lane and Brendan Meara (’04 painting.)
