Tony Jones cbe, Interim President
Tony Jones cbe joined KCAI in December 2014 as interim president.
Jones is an internationally known arts administrator, broadcaster, educator, exhibition curator and historian of art, architecture and design and a consultant on higher education and the arts. A citizen of both Britain and the United States, he was educated at Goldsmith’s College in London and the Newport College of Art in Wales as a sculptor, painter and art historian. He came to the United States for postgraduate study as a Fulbright Scholar. He was appointed president of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1986, serving in that capacity until 1991, when he took a position as director of the Royal College of Art in London. He returned to SAIC in 1996 and served as president until 2012, when he was named chancellor and president-emeritus. From 1996 to 2012 he also was co-CEO of the Corporation of the Art Institute of Chicago. Among other leadership appointments, he was chairman of the department of art and art history at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, and director of the Glasgow School of Art in the U.K.
Conferred the title Commander of the British Empire by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 2003, Jones holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, six honorary doctorates and an array of international honors. He was conferred the Austrian Knight’s Cross for services to education in Europe, elected an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects and received the Distinguished Service Award of the American Lawyers for the Arts, to mention only a few. He is a former two-term national chairman of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design, a consortium of which KCAI is a member. In 2011, an historic landmark building in downtown Chicago was named Jones Hall in his honor.
Jones is widely sought as a consultant and keynote speaker on the role of the arts and education and their cultural and economic impact. In the academic arena he has led or been a senior team member for accreditation agencies in the U.K., Finland, China, Singapore, Canada and the United States, specializing in strategic planning, program construction, faculty and facilities, operational management, board development and fundraising.
He is a recognized authority on the development of art, design and architecture in the Modern Age, most notably the work of British architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Arts & Crafts Movement, the Vienna Werkstatte, the Celtic Revival and the British chief designer for Liberty’s of London, Archibald Knox. As a curator he has created numerous exhibitions in the U.K. and U.S., as well as touring exhibitions in Japan. In addition to numerous books and articles, he has scripted and hosted several television series and radio programs for the BBC, including “Cities Under the Skin: Glasgow and Chicago” for BBC-TV Scotland and “Painting the Dragon,” a four-part series on contemporary artists for BBC-TV Wales. His book “Welsh Chapels” resulted in a major exhibition of his research into chapel culture at the National Museum, Cardiff, and two television programs.
Jones is president of the Sir James Dyson Educational Foundation in America, co-chair of the Royal College of Art Foundation and international ambassador of the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts (“Young Arts Miami”).
Bambi Burgard, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs
Bambi Burgard joined KCAI in 2000 as assistant dean for academic affairs and director of the academic resource center. In 2006, she became associate vice president for student achievement; from 2008 to 2010 she served the college as interim vice president for enrollment management; in 2010 she was promoted to vice president for enrollment management and student achievement; and in 2012, she was named vice president for academic affairs. Before coming to KCAI, she worked in the student counseling center at University of Missouri-Kansas City and in private practice. Burgard earned her doctorate in counseling psychology from University of Missouri-Kansas City and is a licensed psychologist in Missouri and Kansas.
Anne Canfield, vice president for communications
Anne Canfield joined KCAI in 2002 from the Kauffman Foundation, where she had been vice president for communications. Before that she spent nearly 16 years as a communications consultant with Fleishman-Hillard Inc., an international public relations consulting firm, where she was a senior vice president and partner. She holds a bachelor's degree in English from Stanford University in California, studied on the graduate level at the University of Michigan and is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America. In 2011, she received the Arthur E. Lowell Award for excellence in organizational communications, the highest honor bestowed by the Kansas City chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators.
Larry Dickerson, vice president and Chief Information Officer
Larry Dickerson joined KCAI in 2006 from William Jewell College, where he served as director of information services, spanning 27 years as an administrator, teacher, speaker and coach. He holds a bachelor’s degree from William Jewell in physics and philosophy and a master’s degree in divinity from Yale University.
Nicolle Ratliff, vice president for advancement
Nicolle Ratliff joined KCAI in 2012 from the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, where she was development director. Before that, she was manager of individual giving at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, with responsibility for the Nelson’s Friends of Art and Society of Fellows membership groups.A member of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s 2011-2012 Centurions class, Ratliff was an ambassador for the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, serving on that group’s executive committee from 2006-2010 and on the “1Yr2Go” planning committee. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Kansas, from which she graduated cum laude, and she studied art history in Florence, Italy, and Paris.
Gina Golba, dean of student affairs
Gina Golba joined KCAI in 2006 as director of student affairs. In 2012, she was promoted to dean of students. She currently holds the position of dean of student affairs, working with registration, academic and career advising, disabilities and academic support, as well as student life. She earned a bachelor's degree at Pittsburg State University, as well as a master's degree in higher education administration from Kansas State University. She has 15 years of experience in student affairs, including participation in a number of professional organizations, including NACA, ASCA and AICAD. Prior to joining KCAI, she held positions at Southwestern College and Kansas State University.
Laura Snow, CPA, CGMA, vice president for administration/CFO
Laura L. Snow, CPA, CGMA, joined KCAI in 2015 as vice president for administration/CFO. At KCAI, she oversees human resources, campus security, facilities, the business office and auxiliary services, including the art supply store. Previously, she served as executive vice president for administration and CFO at Saint Paul School of Theology in Overland Park, Kan., and before that she served in both nonprofit and for-profit businesses as CFO and CEO. From 1986 to 2000 she was an owner and partner with Gottlieb Kalender + Snow of Leawood, Kan., a CPA firm serving small to medium-sized business in a variety of industries. A Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Global Management Accountant, Snow holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and has studied accounting and business administration on the graduate level. In July 2014, the Kansas City Business Journal named her CFO of the Year in the “small nonprofits” category.
Julia Welles, dean of admissions and recruitment
Julia Welles joined KCAI in 2003 as a regional coordinator from the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, where she had been director of adult education and an instructor at the University of Minnesota. In 2007, she became associate director of admissions, and in 2012 she was promoted to director of recruitment. In 2013, she served as interim director of admissions and recruitment, and in 2014 she was promoted to dean of admissions and recruitment. She holds a bachelor's degree in printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute and an M.F.A degree in printmaking from Cranbook Academy of Art.
